This is a story of the Battle of Stalingrad seldom talked about.  Dr. Hans Dibold, an Austrian physician from the Sixth German Army relates his heart-rending experiences in the infamous battle during the bitter winter of 1943, and describes the utter helplessness he felt as casualties climbed so high in conditions so appalling while trying to survive with little or no medical supplies or food. After capture, Dibold remained imprisoned in Stalingrad in conditions that are beyond comprehension. Part of the time he was held in the huge underground Timoshenko bunker the Russians had built. Often working in complete darkness in narrow corridors crammed full of injured dying soldiers, Dr. Dibold could offer little comfort. The lice were atrocious, and Dibold describes scooping them out from injured abdomens, the stench unbearable, and the black tarry walls dripping with stink from the condensation of steam oozing from untreated wounds. Typhus was rampant. Although enemies, Dibold, a deeply religious man, speaks with compassion of the Russians, particularly of the sympathy he found from among their medical staff. This is the haunting true story of the indomitable human spirit.

Long out-of-print, a beautiful, limited to 1000 copies edition in COLLECTIBLE NEAR FINE condition.
