Stiff gatefold paper wrappers with front cover photograph and black and white cover titling, and white spine titling. Inside gatefold wrappers decorated with Francisco Toledo’s illustrations of processions of goats walking on their hind legs. Graciela Iturbide signed her name on the half title page, next to another of these illustrations.

Softcover Collectible catalog in LIKE NEW condition. Spine crown shows slight rubs, and a small, crescent-shaped indentation. Also a couple tiny, shallow indentations on rear cover. Else Fine. Pristine pages, with exception of small, light mark from finger on copyright page.

Catalog of 26 b&w gelatin silver print photographs of pastoral life in Mexico during the Feast of Santa Maria. Nomadic shepherds sacrifice and dismember large numbers of goats using special knives handed down through generations. The shepherds believe that offering prayers “en el nombre del Padre” ensure celestial protection during the bloody rights, which take place over a 10 -15 day period.

On page 66 is a quote from the goat: “You must know that with my death I must purchase your lives and you must serve my sons and the sons of my sons, and that my royal blood must be repaid with your own.”
