Arch Oboler (December 7, 1909 – March 19, 1987) was a provocative and controversial groundbreaking American writer perhaps best known for his innovative radio scripts for the popular horror program “Lights Out” broadcast weekly at midnight on NBC Radio and noted for its extreme violence.  Oboler was also a multi-talented playwright, screenwriter, novelist, producer, and director who was active in radio, films, theater, and television.  Praised as one of broadcasting’s top talents, he is regarded today as a key innovator of radio drama. Oboler’s personality and ego were larger than life. Before and during World War II, Oboler wrote many anti-fascist radio plays, some featuring the talents  of many Hollywood movie stars:  Gary Cooper, Bette Davis, Dick Powell, Bob Hope, Edward G. Robinson, Don Ameche, James Cagney, Ronald Colman, Edmond O’Brien, JImmy Stewart, Fred MacMurray and Claude Rains.
