Lawrence Monsanto Ferlinghetti (March 24, 1919 – February 22, 2021) was an award-winning American poet, painter, social activist, and co-founder of City Lights Booksellers & Publishers.

Ferlinghetti is the author of 30 books of poetry, and has penned translations, fiction, theatre works, art criticism, film narration, and is the esteemed champion of the Beat poetry movement in the United States, notably publishing the works of Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, among many others. Following service in the U.S. Navy as an officer during World War II, Ferlinghetti earned a Master’s degree in English literature from Columbia University in 1947. From Columbia, he went to Paris and earned a doctoral degree in comparative literature from the Sorbonne. In 1956, Ferlinghetti published Allen Ginsberg’s book Howl and Other Poems, which resulted in his being arrested by the San Francisco Police for publishing “obscene work” and his subsequent trial gained him international attention. At trial end the judge concluded that Howl had “some redeeming social importance” and “was not obscene,” and Ferlinghetti prevailed. In 1994, San Francisco renamed a street in Ferlinghetti’s honor, and in 1998, he was named the first poet laureate of San Francisco. He was the recipient of many national and international awards and honors, including the National Book Critics Circle Ivan Sandrof Award. In 2007 he was named Commandeur, French Order of Arts and Letters.
